Primary Care Provider + Family Practice
Dr. Melissa Gibbons (she/her) is a nationally board-certified Naturopathic Doctor (ND) who practices within our Santa Fe and Albuquerque clinics. As a Primary Care Provider at Mountain Spirit, she works in partnership with patients to help them achieve their own health goals. Licensed in both NM and AZ, Melissa’s experience includes almost a decade of work in the field. She cares for people ages 3 and over including annual exams & sick visits, managing acute & chronic diseases, and promoting wellness across the lifespan.
Dr. Melissa is an in-network Provider with Presbyterian, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, and Cigna. She even welcomes Centennial / Turquoise Care (NM Medicaid) for patients insured via BCBS and Presbyterian. Naturopathic Doctors are Licensed by the NM Medical Board as Primary Care Physicians. ND’s focus on identifying the cause of disease and treating the whole person. Like NM licensed MDs, they manage and prescribe medications (with the exception of controlled substances), while providing integrative therapy options that support a patient’s innate health and wellbeing.
Dr. Melissa provides treatment for emotional and mental health support such as managing depression, anxiety, and providing episodic care as needed. She also offers women’s health and family planning care including some gynecological services, preconception support, contraception including IUDs, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and more. As her practice develops here, she plans to implement a variety of additional services and procedures to meet the needs of our patient community.
“I believe that the body knows what’s best for itself and, given the right conditions, can heal itself. This approach allows me to offer my knowledge and guide my patients through a shared decision-making process for individualized care plans. I’m deeply aware that health encompasses not just a symptom or disease, but a person’s whole experience. My ability to see the bigger picture allows me to accompany people along their healing process, while helping them establish a strong foundation for lifelong health. There is no personal health without a healthy community, and the natural systems of our world. Therefore, I’m committed to social justice including equity in healthcare.”
Here at Mountain Spirit, we take a holistic approach. Our Providers listen mindfully to you, your medical symptoms and needs, while reserving time to ensure they are addressed. Dr. Melissa is skilled in a variety of procedures that are available right here in our comfortable treatment rooms. The lab work, imaging, treatments, and referrals she recommends are based on scientific evidence for the prevention and treatment of disease. We have found the services our patients receive are most successful when it is understood why they’re being recommended, and chosen based on your own values.
Dr. Melissa’s care is both patient and family centered, with the ability to modify based on your feedback. She encourages our patients to research their own specific conditions, and as a healthcare partner she helps with patient education. She endeavors to explain the expected outcome and possible complications that might arise, so patients make informed decisions for their own healthcare. In alignment with Mountain Spirit’s values which include providing respectful care for our whole community, Melissa warmly welcomes Transgender patients and those of diverse gender identities to her Primary Care practice.
In the past, Melissa has also worked as a Certified Midwife in Arizona birthing centers. She is a passionate advocate of this care. Though no longer practicing midwifery at this time, she happily refers pregnant patients to whatever type of birthing specialist (Midwife or OB) that they prefer.
Personal Biography
“Born and raised in Northern New Mexico, I was exposed to natural medicine from an early age. Growing up, the healthcare we experienced was a combination of modern medicine approaches together with healthy food, herbs, and homeopathics.
As a child, I was often found walking barefoot through forests and arroyos. This strong connection to the natural world continues to inform my life and medical practice. I’m still at home hiking, exploring canyons with ropes, or climbing the occasional tree.
I’ve returned to New Mexico with my partner to be close with family, and provide care to our medically underserved community. It’s a joy to be back living in Santa Fe! I am also happy to help expand quality healthcare options for those living in the growing Albuquerque area.
I am excited to work as part of the Mountain Spirit team of providers! Since bringing my practice here, I see my work as a sincerely heart-driven next step in my medical career. I am thrilled to be able to offer my services to new and existing patients of Mountain Spirit, and to my former patients from over the places and years.
Let’s work together to help you enjoy your best self!”
